When I was young, I was never a serious believer in the supernatural. In fact, I was extremely skeptical about the very existence of ghosts themselves. After all, "visions" of etheral spirits could very well be caused by hallucination or imagination. However, everything changed when I was visited by something that I can neither scientifically explain or deny.
Back when I was in junior high, I used to take pleasure in staying awake until the morning for one night every summer. I would go down to the family room, watch TV, and read for nearly eight hours. In the morning, I would simply crawl into bed and fall asleep for six hours.
It was during one of these all-nighters that I received my first taste of the supernatural. While watching television, it occurred to me that I had nearly forgotten something upstairs. Smiling at my own foolishness, I stood up and started to walk down the hallway leading to our foyer. As I neared the end of the hall, I suddenly heard a noise. I, being a piano player, immediately recognized it as a low G. However, at the time, we didn't own a piano of any kind. Shaking my head, I walked on. As I neared the entrance to the foyer, I heard the note again, this time even louder and more persistent.
By now, being a young teenager, I began to shake a little, but I stepped into the foyer, hoping to find the light switch. However, it was pitch dark, and I tried to feel my way towards where I thought the switch was. Then, the G note rang again, this time very loud and very persistent. A little spooked, I happened to turn to my right; and then I saw it. A faint cloud, mist, or outline glimmering just a few feet from me. Biting my lip so I would scream, I quickly dashed back to family room and didn't move for the next four hours.
Of course, when I told my parents, they claimed they had heard nothing. So, naturally, I tried to relax. However, that was not the end of my troubles.
Two weeks later, I had decided to go to bed early. The hallway light was on, and my parents were downstairs, so I felt relatively safe. Crawling under the covers, I turned off my light. Just as I began to close my eyes, I heard footsteps clomping up the stairs next to my bedroom. At first, I disregarded it, thinking that it was my parents. Normally, I would have been able to see their shadow as they came up the top steps. However, no shadow appeared. Confused, I shook my head and closed my eyes again. Once again, the footsteps came up the stairs. Fear rising in me, I quickly turned on the light and ran outside my room. No one was on the stairs. Spooked, I turned off the light and crawled back into bed. Fortunately, I didn't hear any footsteps.
Just as I was about to doze off again, I heard someone whisper in my ear. Even now, ten years later, I have no idea what the voice said. However, I could have sworn I heard, "Next time"
